get a little breeder unit that floats in your tank or attaches to the side. i would do whatever you can to minimize stress and make sure their bellies are full. air stones are nice but do very little to oxygenate water. surface agitation is the way to go. if you have power heads point them toward the surface. i can actually see my fish working harder to breath when i dont have enough surface agitation...

Cool I appreciate the info. Do you have any pictures of your bowfin? I noticed on our babies they have really cool patterns and colors on their head and tail but on all the adult ones I see pictures of are really boring and kinda ugly. What is the one in your avatar? Is that a bowfin or channa?

Oh and....looking at your avatar again, that is almost exactly what their pattern looks like. It is really pretty, I thought they lost it with age and size though

they will lose the color but get a really cool pattern when fed healthy. they are beautiful even when they are bland in color and really social in your tank. i like to feed them raw shrimp in the shell, smelt and earth worms when they get bigger...

UPDATE on the little guys:

Well, I can't seem to figure out what is going on here but one of the bowfins is doing great! Eating atleast 2x per day, swimming around when I turn on the lights and has definitely grown a small amount. The other one is always up in the corner, sometimes he even sticks himself to the intake on the canister filter? I though he was dead but then when I moved it a little bit he darted to the other side of the tank. He is swimming just fine (not floating or anything) But he is just showing a very different personality than the other. Very shy and doesn't like the light at all. He doesn't eat very often and the healthier one scowers the bottom until there is not one little bloodworm left lol. Anyone know why one is acting great and the other seems to not be doing so well? I am currently only turning the light on for a couple of hours per day and the temp. is about 80 degrees.

So anyone know why the one bowfin is acting so weird and the other is doing great? He came out into the light so I could see him better and he is definitely starving :( His stomach is like caving in. We tried cut up tilapia, blood worms, and cut up beef heart. He isn't interested. Ahh I'm freakin out and I feel horrible.

I had 12 babies and only 4 survived out of those 12. I got them around 1 to 2" and now they're around 3 to 4" in just 3 weeks. All of the babies that just float around in the corner died the next day or two. I'm doing 50 to 70% WCs everyday and feeding them cut up nightcrawlers and guppies. My water is always in 80 to 82 degrees.

I wish you goodluck with your 2 babies :)

Thank you. So there is nothing you can really do for the weaker ones? He just doesn't seem interested in anything I put in the tank. I have also tried guppies, I forgot to mention. I'm not sure who ate them (I put 10 in there) but the little ones stomach didn't get any bigger so i'm assuming he didn't. I have hope for the bigger one though. I'm pretty sure he's going to make it! He is eating like crazy.
