Hey, so id like to formally say hello to all other arowana keepers for I am now a proud owner of a little silver arow! Now, ive done my homework but i just have a few questions of my own.
First off, hes about 7 or 8 inches, got him last night, he obviously hasnt eaten yet, but im wondering what i should start him on? The goal is to get him to start up eating shrimp, worms and talapia of the bottom of the tank.
Also, is it normal for arows to lay on the bottom of the tank? I came down stairs this morning to look at the tank and hes basically laying on the sand, perhaps resting? As soon as the lights flicked on he got up and started swimming like usual.
One last question, is it normal for young silvers to have a red tint to them throughout they're whole tail? Or have i lucked out by getting a silver with perhaps some traces of red arow in him?
Any input is appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

I would urge you to fees him top water and not bottom unless you want a fish with drop eyes.

Wellcome to the vice.

Many silvers have a reddish tinge to them. They are not the result of any mixing with asian red aro's.

She is still "nervous" about her new confines, that is why she is on the bottom. She is unsure.

Let some days go by without trying to feed her. You will see her increasingly cruising and coming up to the higher levels of the tank.

There is nothing wrong with it taking food from the bottom ( there is no knowledge of what causes Drop Eye ).

Start her on floating stuff ; she'll get used to swimm down after the sunken items in time.

Enjoy.

congrats on your new aro..as miguel said it is normal for the aro to be nervous about its new surroundings and will stay in a corner and sometimes sit on the sand...also most silvers will prefer to take the food as you drop it in the tank...it amazing to see your aro take food from the top..i prefer to feed my aro one by one so that i can see it grab the food rather than throwing a bunch and seeing it pick from the bottom...good luck with your aro

Why would you want it to eat off the bottom? It would make a lot more sense, imo, to just feed it from the top, since they are specifically built for taking food from the surface of the water. It would seem very unnatural to make it have to swim to the bottom and twist into an awkward position to reach the food.

oh, thanks a tonne miguel and smartlove! appreciate it a lot. the info on the laying on the sand, thats very reassuring! one last thing, what do you think I should try to feed him first?

The first thing you should feed it should be whatever you will be feeding it the most of (for the rest of its life, not just temporarily, since it may not be as easy to convert to new foods once it is older). Once it is readily accepting that, you can start getting it onto the other foods as well.

Personally, I prefer to feed my aro pellets as its main diet (Hikari Cichlid Gold, to be more specific). Pellets alone provide most of the nutrition it needs, so it's much less expensive than providing a wide enough variety of natural foods to do the same (although it is good to suppliment its diet with some natural foods, imo).

pellets, floating pellets. let him get nice and hungry and go without feeding for a few days. Then just throw in a couple of pellets and see if he goes for them. If not taken within the first few minutes, take them out and try again the next day.

okay, so youd suggest that i toss in just worms, shrimp talapia and pellets until he starts eating basically?
