just got my first oscar.. slight problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ill go check tomorrow or sunday, im a little iffy on getting another oscar. my little guy was the smallest they had, but the best looking/healthiest looking.

im afraid of conflict between it and a bigger one.

but i will go look!

We have 2 oscars together. They love to swim around together. When we transfered them over to the 100 gallon they did the same thing. I got a little scared too, but they were just being drama queens. lol I also have a pleco in all my tanks. But you might want to wait until you have some build up for him to eat. We found that the oscars ate the plecos algae tablets.

ahh, i was actually going to ask about that!

i just went into my room, he was swimming around just fine, turns around and sees me and drops to the bottom. hes now pouting again.

freakin drama queen! haha! only pouts when im looking!

well since the last thing i owned was a goldfish and some algae eaters, thats a nice change to be appreciated! :D

where to begin.... first off since that is the only fish in the tank as by the look of the glass beads and the sides of the tank it is a fresh set up. you dont want to add any more fish. keep the bioload as light as possible until the cycle completes if you need info on the cycling process of a tank use the search function there are about a million threads about it. when feeding your oscar if he isnt eating the food remove it from the tank after about 15 minutes. if he isnt going for the pellets you might try frozen mysis shrimp, just make sure that you thaw the cube out and discard the water they were frozen in as it contains nutrients that will break down and cause excess bio waste. after your tank is cycled i would suggest dithers to entice your O to come out and play instead of hiding, i prefer silver dollars to most any other dithers. you could add 4-5 to make a nice shoal. but only add 1 per week after the cycle completes, and make sure they are small enough that they wont grow too much before you upgrade tanks. keep an eye on your nitrate level and change as much water as you need to so you keep it under 20ppm. best of luck to ya.

^^ cycle was complete before i even put him in, unnoticeable ammonia and nitrites with a tiny bit of noticeable nitrates. the ph was a tiny bit above perfect.

today i woke up and he's swimming around a good bit, but still just finding a corner to lay in every now and then. i tossed in a few little pellets and hes completely un-interested

maybe he didnt see it or something? the pellets were floating.

any ideas?

the floating food is fine, just try alittle bit every day if he doesn't eat just take it out and try again tomorrow. I had a oscar go for two weeks before he would take pellets, didn't affect his health on bit.here it is (it will be 1 year old on may 9th of this year)not eating for two weeks didn't even slow him down.
