Just got my Fluval FX-5

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends on the bioload of the tank. The filter wont remove nitrates, I don't know how long it would take to populate the filter with benefical bateria in an established tank, assuming your tank is established. It looks clean to the eye because the mechanical filtration and completely clean filter media is just sucking everything up. It could look crystal clear and be slowly posioning your fish. The water parameters are the real key. What is the stock now? Any other filters? How long has the tank been up and running? What are the water parameters?

I just got mine on Wednesday, I hope to have it up and running tomorrow. I have plenty of bio-filtration, I got the fx5 for the added mechanical.

I threw my old filter sleeve in the middle basket just so my fish would still have the beneficial bacteria the needed.I also have both the top and bottom baskets filled with the ceramic pellets that are suppose to capture the bacteria, those have been there for almost a week now, which is about the right time needed to gather the bacteria. There are no other filters. As far as the water parameters,I have not gone to the local pet store to get a test kit as of yet but plan on going today.I have a total of 15 African cichlids for stock in a 125 gal.

i love the fx5's, but i agree with everyone else here-dont waste your money on those fine white circular pads, or for that matter the blue ones! i just fill it with ceramic rings and a bag of purigen, then leave the outer filters in it...

I don't think anyone answered my question on weather or not the FX-5 keeps the build up of fish crap within the gravel.I seem to not have to gravel clean as much when I do my weekly water change with my new FX-5(compared to my old POS Magnum 350).Any thoughts? Any body?

hmm i keep sand, so whatever food and poop i have settles right on top of it, and its easy to syphon off. i havent noticed that the substrate is dirtier, i just syphon every other week.

im not sure why your gravel would be dirtier, maybe you are feeding more? you could build some ugj's out of pvc (its really easy) and put that between rockwork and gravel-it will help less stuff settle in the bottom. and have the jets aimed towards your fx5 intake..

I'm building a revrse flow UGF right now and plan on using the FX5 outflow to flush the gravel. I installed it this weekend, now I'm being too lazy to plumb it. Popular opinion suggest the FX5 have a greater flow when hard plumbed. Look in the DYI section.
