Never seen the point for it myself, after all, no matter what has happened since, you loved her once.

It's best to be ready with a good defense, back yourself up. My cousin's wife moved away with his daughter, left no forwarding address nothing. So each week he took the equivalent of his child support and put it in the bank. When she turned up 3 years later with the cops claiming he hadn't payed child support and that all he had to do was ask her folks where she was (he did to no avail), he had all the proof ready. She ended up looking like a fool waisting court time.
Yep, loved becomes past tense sometimes, suprisingly it does not have to become hate, avoidance or even distaste perhaps, but not hate. Hate gives them to much power. Why waste your time and energy over something that would be better filed under lessons learned.
Sometimes it is not easy and when kids are involved it becomes harder, sounds like Filthy Sanchez's cousin was a very prudent man and he got the last laugh.
On the other hand I heard of one rather nasty bit of petty spite that made me snicker. A young woman split with her boyfriend and decided that she would be unkind. Before leaving she sewed several raw shrimp into the valances of the curtains all through the house. EEEEWWW!
