Just inherited a small blue prawn. What should I know?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So, why does he yank down on his antennae? Is this a post-molt activity to prevent brittleness or is he cleaning them?
Also, he now has two small spots bilaterally on his back near the tail. Is this a species indicator or an incidence of this individual's coloration?
He is loving the guppies now. Just stalking them all over the place and stuffing them down his throat!
Can I judge his age or max size by frequency of molts? Temp is now around 78º F.

I saw him going after the baby gups this morning, claws outstretched robotically. I've named him Nemesis.

Nemesis now has a patch of fungus on one of the brown spots on his back. I know better than to medicate a shrimp, so should I just polish it off and superglue the area? Would that kill the rhizomes?

If I knew how to post pictures life would be a lot more fun. I tried like five times and realized it just doesn't work. Sorry. But, trust me, it's a white ball of fungal fluff, like an uneaten shrimp pellet gets. What is the usual course for this?

okay
A. most large inverts like prawns, crayfish, and bamboo shrimp live for MANY years. on average sometimes they can live longer than your average house hold pet (over 10 years for crayfish and SOME prawns.).
B. whats its size; what is the size of tank.

C. HOW DARE YOU ACUSE THIS FORUMN OF BEING INACTIVE:banhim:!!! so i go away for a few days and ppl go to sleep and stop posting? i must be the most active member here:werd::popcorn:(and im eating popcorn now?:WTF:)...

D. DO NOT FRY:banhim:!!! you are lucky you have one dont even think about frying him:nilly:! i have said this 5 times in this hour ill say it again: as with all invertebrate DO NOT KEEP WITH FISH SMALLER/SAME SIZE AS INVERT IN QUESTION!!!(lest is be shrimp then id be worried about the shrimp becoming food) do not house with puffers or else either one could become food!

that is all.:shakehead

Wow! It's so great to get some intrigue at last!

I figured most lobster-esque beings only lived about five years. It's great to know my guy could live a lot longer!

He is in a 55 with guppies, angelfish, a young Longear Sunfish, a raphael catfish and an Oto. I had to remove the Molly when he decided the sunfish was a female of his own species 8( .

The sunfish might eventually decide to snack on him, but he's pretty good at defending himself. If they fought, I'd have to favor the Sunfish. The thing cost $20 and is amazing. The shrimp was free, but he's so awesome, I'd try him in another tank before letting him get eaten. I do prefer my creatures alive.

He was supposed to eat the guppies, which he did for awhile, but I think I feed him too well now. He recently spent twelve hours eating an earthworm tail-first. And since he eats every type of food, he ends up eating overall more often than many of the other inhabitants. I love watching him spin algae wafers across his mouth! And the way he confronts everybody with his pincers open is truly impressive. I don't think anything is going to eat him. I'm big on feeding well, letting algae grow and doing frequent water changes. I also just added live plants for the first time, so we'll see how that goes.

What's the best temp for a Red Macro? He's handling 90ºF pretty well as I'm treating Ich, so it would seem they are adaptable. There seems to be no agreement on what species even exist, so I have no way to know what best to do for him. Just good, general maintenance seems to be sufficient so far. Any special food requirements? He's only around three inches body length and molted recently.

Oh, the frying was just a joke/response bait. I was frustrated, so I made a mild taunt. I should be obvious that aquarium-raised creatures are not of food quality, plus I wouldn't be posting here if I didn't care about him.
