Who here is with me that some animals should NOT be kept in captivity? A zoo is fine, as long as they can care for the individual animal.

Here is my list of animals that should not be owned by any random a** person.

Monkeys(Chimps, Ourangatangs, Lemurs)
Crocodilians(Caimans, Gators, Crocs, Gharials)
Over sized snakes(Burms, Rocks, Indians, Retics, Scrubs)
Sharks(any type, come on people its a shark)
Any over sized fish(5 foot+, and still, thats to much for me)
Turtles(Snappers, Sea Turtles, other giant ones)
Large Lizards(Croc Monitors, Malaysian Waters, Niles, anyting else large)
Big Cats(Lions, Ligers, Tigers, Jaguars)
Other(Rhinos, Elephants, Girrafes)

Am I missing someting or does anyone here disagree with this or my other comment? Please tell me:irked:

I know plenty of private hobbyists that can care for these animals, and even successfully breed them. In our country, a lot of people need licences to keep them anyway, so people who do aren't the type of people who think "o thats cute" without giving a second thought to it's well being or care. On the following, i am basing this for how it is in the UK...
monkeys: not sure on the laws but i'm pretty sure you need some licencing for all the species that are legal to keep. Also pretty much all breeders will only sell you their captive bred stock knowing you can take care of it, and many will demand proof of this. Wooley Lemurs, Squirel Monkey, Tamerins, Owl Monkey, Sloths and im sure many other similar species are on our D(angerous)W(ild)A(nimals) list anyway, and this can be a difficult and is always and expensive licence to obtain and you also have to have qualified persons (such as vets) to come over and ask you about husbandry and inspect the premises.

Crocodilians- also under DWA, so not every tom dick or harry just goes "sweet i want one"

Over sized snakes- no licencing aqcuired, I've never met a breeder or a pet shop owner who stocks them that would sell them to anyone (esp. breeders). Don't here of many people who get into them for the wrong reason or horror stories either. Plenty of people can keep the above snakes with ease (with experience of course)

Turtles - aren't sea turtles illegal pretty much everywhere? Other larger species, i know plenty of people that keep them and have specialised set ups.
Large lizards- not sure on licencing or anything, never looked into it.

I know because of our licencing thing that it is different for a lot of things here, however anyone would be stupid and niave to think that people beside zoos could care for these animals, because frankly this is not true in the slightest. I think you are being over dramatic personally, although I think in the US you get a lot more people jumping into these kind of things than you do over here...
but "animals should NOT be kept in captivity" is not true at all.

so your saying that lion i ordered needs to have a licensce for it?

While I don't think alot of the above mentioned animals are for everybody, I certainly see no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to be kept by an individual if they have the proper skills/equipment/habitat/enclosure/whatever to keep said animal. What I would like to see however is some kind of licensing/permit system for people wishing to keep such creatures. I keep a burm, and have kept monitors and other large lizards. I like to think that I take very good care of my animals, on the other hand I have seen MANY people who do not. I would gladly pay a licensing fee or take a course whatever if it were nessesary to ensure that these animals don't just end up in the hands of impulse buyers who see said animal want to buy it. Hell even if sellers of these types of animals had buyers go through a process similar to adopting from an animal shelter that would deter alot of people who simply would not be able to care for the animal in the long run.

you wouldn't pay what it is over here... it gets to be rediculous... (depending on where you live). Our licencing system is gigantically flawed.

OK, let me re-phrase what I said.

Pet stores should not be aloud to sell any of the animals above. Also, the only way to get one of the animals mentionned.

Hey you British folks, I have no problem with you ****, to me, your are some, smart and cool people. BUT, I can't help but laugh at the way ou talk! Hamsta! LOL HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I think the larger problem is in america where some imature 17-30 year old can walk up into a pet shop and buy anything he wants. Next thing you know, its on the 10:00 news in the everglades....

yea im sure it does happen over here, but no where near as much. You'll get little lizards and corns and kingsnakes let loose, but there aren't many shops that carry the bigger stuff... and when they do they are usually specialised in keeping them and won't be sold to any nim-nom. British accent? You mean english accent. (or scottish welsh or irish)
