Just an observation...
The compact flourescent you just installed takes 10 times the energy to produce as a regular incandescent does to manufacture....
And what will you do with it when it quits working?
It contains lead and mercury.... can't drop that in the landfill can you?
Just an observation...

the energy that incadesent light bulbs consume far exceeds the energy that it takes to manufacturing CFLB's.

I wasn't gonna post on here anymore but I just thought of something. If we need to conserve energy, should we all limit ourselves to 1 10g tank w/UGF's?After all, it takes the burning of hydrocarbons to produce electricity in most cases.Maybe we should all be PFK(punyfishkeepers).

not nessesarily

we can have our monster tanks, we jsut need to use energy efficient equipment and cut down on flow.

if you cycle a tank say 10 times, as alot of people do, then cut it in half to 5 times, you get the same filteration effect but with less energy.

What should I do Del? I'm only using 80watts for the pumps on my 300.

Thats way to much. You are going to have to tear that tank down (I'll be there to "dispose" of it soon).

It's interesting... I have stopped using heaters completely. I don't keep "heat picky" fish so I figured... why use heaters?

My fish have adapted exceedingly wonderfully to this new regimen - see my fish list - everyone is thriving and happy. In addition to saving energy, I feel it is in fact more natural for them to be in a room that is (close to) natural temps, that flucuate slightly from time to time.

I run one small heater on my room and keep it between 74 and 80 degrees.
In addition, I never have to worry about a heater breaking, shorting out, or dying, or overheating, etc.

Still doesn't address the toxic waste issue...
(and many find CFL's light quality unappealing)
LED technology may improve and be the real answer in the long run, but for now they will have to pry my 150 watt 3 ways out of my cold, dead hands! ;)
BTW...I also really enjoy BBQ over a real wood fire..smoked for hours also
