Just so Ticked right now.

it was 10 feeders and 3 fish at them but I can agree thats to much. I don't think I will use feeders again. I always new of the risk but was noticing a lot of aggression so I thought I would try it, and it didn't help.

as far as the ammonia in the water I never use anything but prime, my filter always cleared it up after a water change within the 24 hours prime was binding it. The drip system over whelmed my filter in the first week but was fine after that.

I tend to agree about the appetite, my Oscar has been acting strange every since I did the 10 day NLS challenge. He has been not eating or only sometimes eating for about 2 weeks now. It got better when I started feeding him hikira again but only for a couple days. If you really think its parasites I will net him out and put him in my 29 gallon and feed him the jungle parasite food I have. Also side note I don't feed feeders I have used exclusively hikira, the feeders where used to try and reduce aggression.

I guess I will have to start taking the rocks out once a week to clean the build up out. As far as other means of filtration normally I have a cash reserve for things but its been a bad month. I could always go ghetto and put all the bio media in the tank and use the power heads I have but not sure its enough water movement.

Thats the good thing...water changes are free. Filtration oftentimes falls rediculously short of what it needs to be, especially with big guys like oscars. If I was going to go back and have oscars again, it would probably be a sumped 125...with the biggest pump I could buy. Filter like crazy...

But, h2o changes will work just as well. It just takes a little time every week. If you like your fish, you will enjoy it. I always feel good after spending time cleaning my tanks.

I am on a drip system I was doing 50% changes every week, but now my drip using the calculators is about 56% a week. I normally spot vac when I see nasty build up, but this was all hidden in my cave structure, and my sump was super nasty likely because I have never moved the bio media.

So my lesson here is instead of waiting till I see build up just assume its there and vac it out. I was amazed at how much build up there was, last time I pulled all the rocks because I noticed build up there was like a cup of gunk this time there was much more.

What do you think about putting the rocks on a platform on stilts to allow water and gunk to flow under it and thus back out the filter.

That would help. Using a powerhead would too.

How many oscars? What size tank?

I only have one Oscar its a 220 with 55 gallon sump. Now here comes the kicker, I have the tank and sump clean re risned the media. I am putting the media back in the sump and I hear crash glass shatter, So i run to check on my wife and daughter. what do I see the entire bedroom window some how feel out the window and shattered.

Damn, is everyone ok?

As for the crap under the decor. Raising it a little, like 5mm, should be adequate to allow circulation and prevent build up. However, I think it would be worthwhile adding something similar to the koralia powerheads. They are small, manouverable and can have huge flow for their size.
Direct a couple of these to move excess food and poo to the filter intake/overflow so the majority goes where it should go to or have them directing the crap to one corner/side of the tank and then it is in one place for you to vac. This will allow you to pick most of it on a water change and there should only be small amounts of it elsewhere in the tank and under/around decor.

Hope everyone is ok. Good luck.

SO last night 1am the pump seizes. Normally this would not be a problem but because I was cleaning the tank I had the water level lower so I lowered the over flow intakes to allow the tank to run lower. I then turned of the drain for the drip system to allow the sump to fill back up. This is what i normally do when i vac out 20gallons; again this is normally okay. However this plus pump failure spelled out flood. So now I am rigging up the filtration today. bad day yesterday new day today.

Stinks...hope everything is okay. I would also recommend the use of seachem's purigen. Some people with ridiculously overstocked tanks that have terrible maintenance habits get away with it because of purigen.

will look into it, I will also learn from my lesson and just clean more.
