There was a PBS special on Nova called "Lizard Kings" last year. Definitely check it out if you can. Part of the show had a segment about the intelligence of these guys centering around a particular tame, captive dragon.

is it legal for private individuals to own/keep them?

The reason no Komodos are in private hands legally is because all Komodos are property of the Indonesian Gov't and so far none have been handed over to private keepers.........CITIES has nothing to do with it.......Even offspring of any Komodo is still considered Gov't property, and they have the first and last say so in anything involved with them........

Same goes for alot of Cyclura, and why good genetics are rotting in Zoos across the country........

i agree, very good episode. "oceans in glass" was also very good. someday...:D

I hate you, the fact you would post that and the first thing in my mind is that they handed out the first komodo for private collections made my jaw drop and had a million thoughts for builds and breeding projects then i read. I hate you and love you for posting this.

HOLY **** how the hell did you get a Komodo Dragon

I really do wish it was mine. But no, not yet anyways. hopefully one day way down the road...

Even if it were legal to own a Komoto, you would need huge resources to keep it and as we all know, WILD animals are WILD, even when raised from babies. These guys can and will kill a human. They should never be allowed into the public sector as pets. Much like the pacu, they simply get to big for most ppl to care for properly and eventually some idiot will get ate by their "pet" komoto...Legalization will never happen....

Then what about things like the water monitor that actually grow larger than the komodo? or the croc monitor that is also quite large but with a temper from hell? Both of these are kept by the private sector and are totally legal even without permits. You mentioned that Pacus cannot be kept by most people but what about those on this site that can and do keep pacus in nice large tanks and who are not most people?
