Just to show my West African tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when you say the angelicus is "mean" - what do you mean? I do have a small colony of them and they seem to act normal - stay on their place or caves and just show up a few times at feeding time. I don't get to see them often as they hide most of the time. One is outgoing and i normally see it cruising the tank.

They also don't have a big mouth so when they bite, i don't think they'll cause any harm.

I've seen my angelicus biting the polys very often until I changed the setup a little bit - here´s a picture of one of my senegalus during the worsest time._MG_7414.jpg

The bites are not very deep - but I know that the skin is a weak point for the polys. Every poly has these markings more or less and it started, when the angelicus came into the tank. I can`t imagine, they hurt themselves during feeding - usually the food is small enough so they don`t need the "deathroll". And becacuse I saw the angelicus bite them from time to time I think, that´s the reason for the damaged skin.

I dont have that issue and even have rays on the tank. Marks looks like something is sucking the slimes out of the body. I had one occassion though of seeing some featherfin catfish sucking my rays disk but got rid of them.

It could be claiming a territory and if your bichir gets close the angelicus nips it.

Here's my outgoing angelicus (5inches) the rest just likes to hide (theres one inside the skull). I have 4 specimen angelicus. image.jpg

*hmm* There are only two sucking fishes in the tank... Have you ever heard of problems with panaqolus? Maybe it was sheer coincidence i saw the marks first time when the angelicus came in. The L448 have been there from the very beginning...
Okay - when I change the setup in december I´ll have to take every fish out of the tank. I´ll give away the panaqolus to my fathers tank and see, if there still will be problems with my polys skins or not.

Only pleco i have on the tank are bristlenose, sailfin gibbicep (albino and normal). For these it is still trial and error, if i see them suck my rays or bichir they get dispose off. Im lucky with albino sailfin and they dont suck slime based on my experience. They are easy to see as well in the tank. Bristlenose ends up mostly as feeders - those that learn to hide survives. I just threw 7 bristlenose today on my tank and can only see 3 now. When they went on the water one got caught on my rays disk and ended up as food. Bichirs just ignore them.

I think bristlenose may work on your set up.

I think, I don`t want any non-west african fish in the tank when the L448 are gone. But I also have heard, that ancistrus (your bristlenose) would work. Maybe I´ll try it anytime.

How do you get such good plant growth. I have been trying to get my tank to look like this for a while now and just can't seem to get plants to take off, or stay alive for that matter. My stock would really benefit from a densely planted tank like this, especially my gold wolves. They seem to pick on each other less the fake or live plants I add. And my polys would sure appreciate it as well.

I have very soft water because I use a reverse osmosis system. I harden this water a little bit and use fertilizer in combination to CO². Not very much, but together with the excrements of the fishes it seems to be good for the plants.
And I only have plants, which are robust and don´t need much light like vallisneria, anubia, nymphaea lotus and so on.

Do you think, it´s darker than it should be? They`ve always looked like this - this picture is from when I´ve gotten them about one year ago:
