Just went to Petsmart

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i guess there all different. our petsmart keeps there tanks clean as far as employees most dont know squat but the manager does.

Your walking a dangerous line by adding fish from Petsmart or any other LFS, to your tank without quarentining them first.

:iagree:

Our local Petco has an awesome fish department as far as quality of the tanks and fish. The one young fellow that works there is extremely knowledgeable. I even notice that they actually quarantine new arrival fish. Our Pets Plus has a huge display of fish, but I'm not sure about the quality of them. Many times I see dead fish in the tank. They also have two large Pacus and an Oscar in an indoor pond w/ no heater. I'm willing to bet the water is no more than 68F.

The petsmart here in charleston WV isnt too bad, a couple of the sales staff has some fair knowledge, the tanks are normally clean, the pumps running at max capacity, and the fish seem to be well fed (in most casees) the feeder tanks are the only ones in poor shape, and i think its cause tey overstock them, they need atleast two more tanks to spread the feeders out alittle, since they only stock feeder goldfish they tend to have 500 or so in each 20-30 gallon tank, otherwise they are pretty fair, there were only 4 dragon gobys in a tank, and 10-15 african cichlids (small ones) so they seemed to be alright.

ive purchased a couple pleco's and pictus catfish from petsmart, i think my firemouth came from petsmart and a couple others, but i try to have the LFS order the exact fish i want, but the vendor rarely sends the stuff i want.....

Now walmart is a totally different story, ive seen 30-40 2-3" south american and african mixed cichlids in a 10-15 gallon tank before, it was nasty, half their fish had ich and the other half looked so thin they could die at any moment from hunger, just a sad place for fish.

Well I have a good petco about an hour away from me. I have only had one bad visit and here's my story... One day I went into this petco and wanted to get male GT for my girl GT. I picked out the one I thought was a male and asked the kid if he could get it for me. After catching my GT he put it into a plastic holding cup (the ones that hang on the tanks) and then DROPPED it on the floor when a HOT college chick walked by. My fish landed on the floor and went under the first level of tanks. The kid freeked out, snatched the fish and put him back into the tank. I told him Ill still take the fish. I took him home and named him lucky.

Some of the employees are smart and some are just there for a check. I played the dumb customer just last week. I walked up to an employee and pointed to the arowanas and asked how big they got. To my amazement he said they get big about 4 feet and they grow quick. Im not saying all petco's are great because the world is filled with uneducated people and people who just dont care.

Here is the Managuense tank at the one local petsmart, I have sent this picture to corporate where I hope they do something about this because these conditions are aweful this was last night.

I QT from petsmart for 36 hours, learned the hard way in my community tank from a group of cory cats I bought.

Bump you all need to look at this jaguar tank, this is inhumane.

I can't see much from the pic. My petsmart is very very well kept and highly informative. Most of them are members here....
