Shame I don't live closer. Balas have always been a 'good luck' fish for me when it comes to size. Back in my hay day I got about 6 of them to 8"-12" at once in no time flat.
 
Sorry for your loss, he looks like he was about the same size as my big mama "Lard". I would be core pierced. Do you have more and what size tank are you growing them in? He must have been quite the unit, really sucks

I had a trio and they were all about the same size.I got them from a member a few months ago.I rarely see any decent sized balas around here and mere two to three inchers are going for nearly eight bucks in some stores.

I thought it was going to be tank water on the floor thread...but still not what I'd want to find either - sorry to hear. Sounds like you'll want to address the lid situation. Perhaps as easy as putting something to weigh down, or adding some sort of "locking" mechanism.
