Just when I thought I knew enough about Geophagus orange heads...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm single and I still feel guilty every time I bring a tank in the house. Sometimes I stand here, look around, and think, "WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING WITH ALL THESE FISH?!"

And yet I have more fish on order, and I'm about to start raising two batches of fry. :screwy:

Were (the parents) born/raised in your tanks????? They're absolutely massive for 6 months.

Yes they were born last fall. After my summer trip so it would be late Aug - early Sept. They may look big for their age, but they are far smaller than any orange heads I'd spawned before. It was freaky to see the eggs...

I have some F1 female notatus trying to spawn right now at 3 - 4". I'm trying to prevent it because I'd like them to continue growing (which is going sloooowly).

Those fish are a great size for only a few months old. Cichlids love those discus conditions. :D

lol I guess the discus are the the squeaky wheels. If I had the time (and water money), I'd do daily wc on a Geo tank and see what happens...

A little update - I took what I thought were a pair out and gave them their own tank. A pathetic 30g (36"x12" footprint) but that's all I could do at this time to give them some privacy :(

Well, they spawned again last week, and they actually made it work! Took a video of them guarding eggs. They are taking turns holding wigglers now. Apparently their mouths aren't big enough yet - some wigglers drop out from time to time, but they pick them right up.

I'm actually quite excited, as this may provide the perfect opportunity to test the "if fish start breeding early, they will stop growing" idea.

Cool, glad to see you have another pair.. I have 3 pairs now but being they're delayed mouth brooders the eggs keep getting eaten before the parents scoop them up.. :(

Might be worthwhile getting them a new tank - watching them raise their young is really the most interesting part :)

I have an extra 40 gal that I was gonna use for a low ph Satanoperca tank, do you think a pair would be cool in a 40 ??
