Just when you think all is well...

The tank he was in is so much freaken work. The nitrates tested close to zero haha. That and he showed no signs of illness. Fed him the day before, found him dead when I got home. I was more pissed than anything else. So much work for that little guy and he didn't even live a year.

surprised it was a lot of work, even in my 30 litre betta; one bucket a week and some pothos in the filter keeps all levels practically zero; it's pretty much prompted me to steer away from large tanks entirely

He was a really nice looking betta. Wasn't your fault, they are just not really long lived fish. Especially when you take in to consideration the breeding process they go through to make that fish out of a wild betta. Time for you to go out there and get on the hunt for a new one!

Nothing you could have done by the sounds of it. Don't let it get you down :(

So when I initially put the potting soil in the tank I made a huge freaken mess in the tank lol. It took me weeks to get the water "clear". And when I felt the water was ok for me to put the betta in I was still changing the hell out of the water because the soil was releasing a ton of tannins. Because it's such a small tank I was still changing 50% once or twice a week because of how I work on the rest of my tanks.

My gf still works at a petstore so the one will likely be a "rescue" lol. A couple of my bettas were dropped off either at my store or at her store. They were lucky enough to be brought home.

I was pretty frustrated when I made the thread. If the right little fella comes along, he'll likely be brought home.
