Keep Your Filter Clean!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have an idea for you

Take a white board marker and use it to write a date on the side of the tank which you use to then do the filter pull apart and clean. I try to do my filter clean at least one time per month.

I use tank water to squeeze the snot outta the sponge so as to not kill the bb, and the other stuff I usually discard. Though I dont use carbon very much, I do use chemi pure which last a lot longer than 1 mth. Take my 300g I have 2 rena 4 and a fx5 in the rena 4 I run 1 level of bio balls 1 level of the square sponge and 4 bags of chemi pure, in the fx 5 8-12 bags of chemi pure depending on how restrictive I want the flow to be.

There are those who would think chemi pure is to expensive but to get months out of a bag versus 1 mth makes it more than worth it.

I really think many water problems people have revolve around thier actual filter housing and trays being filled with gunk that destroy the new water anyways from wc.

sorry to hear ya lost your fish but fish live fish die fish come again.

thats a good idea about the board, maybe put one on the inside of my stand cabnet doors...
When I went to get my Convicts earlier, u guessed it, tons of little convict fry swimming around the parents..
There in my tank now and there pretty cool to watch, there definately a pair, wont get away from each other for more than a moment. Im hoping they breed. Not concerned about making money just in it for the experience...

yeah i read up on it actually just now, and when my lfs opens im going to go in and grab some, sounds like its all positive feedback for it...ill give it a try and pray my convicts are good to go
Follow the directions exactly, and shake the bottle for about 15 secs before use too...

Since you nuked the Benificial Bacteria in the filter by washing it in tap water, this will rebuild the colonies of BB...

and your Convicts will be fine...;) :D

Whilst on the topic of water-flow, would it be a good idea to run a powerhead whilst also running two aerators and a Penguin 350? Or would that just be overkill?
