Keeping Discus with an Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im tryin to do the same thing.. I started w/the aro 1st for bout 2 months then put 2 large discus in about 2 weeks ago. 5.5 to 6 inches. Discus get pretty stressed from the aro swimmin around. Seems like he wants to attack but doesnt. I think it would work better if u put the discus in 1st so they can get accustomed to the tank. Then put the aro in. Seems like one of my discus wont make it. He gets too scared and doesnt eat but the other one seems to b doing ok

By pristine, I mean zero ammonia and nitrites and 10ppm of nitrate. Temp at 84 degrees and the pH is best at 6.6 although not that necessary. You first need to have sucessfully kept the discus before adding the aro. Discus need to be kept in groups of 5 or 6. Best to heavily research discus keeping. Once you have discus that are thriving, keeping with and aro will be easier.

Black aros are not more or less aggressive then silver aros. With large aros there is always a chance of a discus ending up in the aros mouth, sometimes it is even accidently.

Realize that to keep the water params where they need to be for discus means alot of W/Cs. So in a monster tank, it'll need to be either understocked, planted or have a drip system to help with the water params.

my aro(silver) was one of the first ones in my tank (48"x24"x36"tall)then abought 2 months later i added my discus 8 in all most around 2 to 3" and have never had a problem thay all were eating together after 1 day and one of my discus will even chase the 8" aro off sometimes its kindof funny butt all in all everyone is happy together. and yes i know i will need a biger tank soon for the aro but for now all is good

Medium to Large Discus, Small Aro and NO TIG!

I had 15 discus with my silver aro. They got along great for almost a year until the aro grew a little faster than the discus. Then he figured out the runts could fit in his mouth, so I lost a couple. The large ones were fine so I would say you just have to watch the size.

exspensive snack. crickets are better feaders for my arow. Lol now on a serious note i'm sure it would be a magicall combination. But kinda like putting wide bars in with a snake head in my opinion. Good luck

Sincerely,

I have a buddy who did discus and motoro rays... the rays use to chase the discus at night and she got smart... so she put several chunks of drift so the discus can hide at night.

anything is possible so go for it.... good luck
