Keeping Exodons with large SA cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The GT didn't kill any filament barbs once they were over 2.5" inches so they are definitely an option again. Mine were all over 4" when they died. It was just difficult finding them.

Alright the experiment is officially over. I came home and saw an exodon in my GTs mouth. None of my fish lost scales, but at this size they cannot be kept with a large cichlid. If anyone in NY area able to meet up tonight or tomorrow wants 6 Exodons for 20 bucks pm and come pick them up.

Thanks! Outside of filament barbs I'm not sure what to do. I like having a school, but the GT might be an issue at this size.

I guess putting my 13 1-2" exodons with my 9.5" male jag is out of the question now... I was hoping you'd have success so I could be a little more optimistic about attempting it as well. Only thing I got going for me is its a 125, not a 55. Still guessing they'd end up as a snack like yours though... As for a solution to your problem, upgrade to something between 75 and 125. The 18 inch width will give you way more options for schools of fish to put with your GT.

Yeah your jag will probably eat them. An observation i made during this experience is that Exodons come to the surface at "night" when the lights go off. Its like clockwork. When they are at the surface they are easy prey because they slow down. I'd love to upgrade the tank. I almost bought a 180 over the summer. Unfortunately I rent though so I want a tank that's relatively easy to move. That being said I can definitely see a 75 or 90 in the near future.

Yes your jag will love you for the expensive snack. I agree upgrading to a larger tank will help the OP for larger schooling fish. Most need the 6' foot print to be active and gives them room to avoid getting killed.

I would definitely upgrade if you can anyway. A 75g or 90g isn't much heavier than a 55g to move and more space is always better. I know what a PITA it is to move tanks around. It took 2 of my friends and I to move my 150g which really sucked.

Moving a 150 definitely doesn't sound fun. I'm hoping we can stay in our current apartment until we buy a house in 3-5 years but you never know and I'm worried a larger tank might scare a new landlord. That being said I doubt a non fish person would be able to to really tell if a tank is a 55 or a 75
