reading comprehension, use it.

i said i knew people who were directly affected by the overfishing of asian aros AS WELL AS the men who were running the asian aro farms.

so both sides, people who would benefit financially as well those who day to day lives once revolved around fishing for food, agree that the asian aro populations are doing far then they were in the 70's when the ban was put in place here in the states. theres a reason why the rest of the civilized world removed their bans and now allow them to be imported.

the funniest thing about the arguement for asian aros is the mods here will cling to that cites ruling like its the hand of god, even though that law now is completely outdated and without merit. i mean, for those saying "where's the study showing populations have increased" why not say "where's the study showing the populations haven't increased"...

but thats not going to happen. the fact is, and this is a 100% verifiable fact, farms across SE Asia are producing 10's of thousands, if not millions of asian aros every year. some are used for food, those with good genetics are sold to those in the fish trades. the US has just decided to stick to a 40 year old ruling and not given it any type of re-consideration because the countrys of origin haven't gone and released a new report.

We cling to it because any illegal sales of this species is still illegal. I don't want the site to get shut down...do you?;)

And why hasn't the country of origin done any new reports? Why should our government find data on something that is so minuscule to our economy?

I read that,comprehended,yeah,and?....Like I already stated, all of this sounds wonderful but there is still no proof of anything.I didn't see a mention of how many of the green aros all of these farmers you said that you know are breeding and setting free into the waters. We are not referring to the golds, the reds, pinks and so forth,of course large numbers of the color variants are being mass produced, that's where the big money is.There is no profit in putting the lowly green aros back into the water, especially so some poachers can capture those as well and we'd be back at square one.

If I frowned upon fishkeepers that kept illegal fish, I'd have no fishkeeping friends :ROFL:Here in California, freshwater rays, asian aros, FRTs and snakeheads are bought and sold like Oscars at a local Petsmart ;)

I do believe that the amount of Asian aro has been replenished enough to justify lifting the ban but at the same time I can't see the us goverment doing that without documented proof and sadly at this point it just doesnt exsist.

and on the same token, why on earth would a country like thailand pay for a new report on the status of wild asian aro's when 99% of the rest of the world (with the USA representing that 1%) allows the importation and sale of farm-raised asian aros. they've got more important things to deal with...like massive tsunamis and huge amounts of corruption at the highest levels of govt.

:ROFL: I do agree...... its like going to the LFS and buying a Convict, not all stores have them but if you go to the right one there you will find what your looking for.

I do believe that it is contingent on a responsible owner and what their intentions are.

to make everyone aware feds do patrol this site to see who keeps illegal fish just a fair warning to anyone about to say anything they will regret!!!!

I don't have any illegal fish nor ever have, but if I ever see someone's snake head or Asian arowana, I'm not saying anything.

and it would be interesting to see what sites have actually been shut down by the feds due to forum members actively discussing the sale/trade of illegal fish. do any of the mods lurking have an old addy for a forum? we can always check google to see what exactly got that particular forum in trouble.

Simply put...it's their responsibility. No one else is going to do a survey for them. Just because people want the nice farm-bred reds, gold, blue, etc. doesn't mean that poachers aren't still out there getting Greens for people who just want to say that they have an Asian Arowana. And I have yet to hear of any farms helping the wild Asian Arowana population. Every country has their own issues to deal with and legalizing Asian Arowanas is at the bottom rung for us as well.
