keeping illegal fish

It makes sense when you look on the micro scale but in the macro level it seems like mentioned before its seems just pointless with fishing and the pet trade in general being what it is we need some super huge reform and that isn't going to happen. Even if we ban a wells catfish between the fish/boating/and other lakeside industries combined with miscellaneous other variables it feels pointless. I mean the eco system as it exists now barely resembles 200 years ago. If the government really wants to do something a chip and registration system for fish wouldn't be bad just stupidly expensive. These other bans just feel like they stifle a free market and in the end don't actually help a thing all while being morally ambiguous anyway ya know. I mean prosecuting someone for having a banned fish is like charging someone for murder when all they did was not like someone and that murdered individual is still alive and unefected. Banning a fish because it could be invasive while so many other animals/pets etc are invasive is kinda goofy. Its so abstract and intangible and generally jives against most of the prevailing notions of what america/freetrade is. Yeah wells would be bad but really so is people relocating natives around our country I'm afraid of when channel cats make it into my parents lake they'll wipe out the bullhead population along with a dozen other fish. Should we then make channel cats illegal even if farm raised. Should we asses all animals based on survivability? How likely is a dog to survive and breed if left in the wild by themselves? A cat? A goldfish? A hamster? Gerbil? Ferrite?
I think we see the problem. Maybe we should outlaw the fishing of native fishes when we have creatures like snake head and carp to take up the hook? It all feels so goofy if you start where do you stop? What are the criteria? Currently all legislation is retro active, and to be proactive you'll want to be more fair with regards to all animals.

This is far off base from where this thread has gone, but......last summer we were at Random Lake, in Random, WI. A little girl had a cup with her goldfish from home in it, she was apparently going to let it go into the lake.
I was VERY happy to see a DNR guy stop her and her parents from releasing it! DNR guy told her father that if she let that go into this lake = There's a fine, can't remember how much,.....and they confiscate your vehicle,......and you're then banned from getting hunting/fishing license for some number of years,.....and can include jail time if person is 'multiple' offender or uncooperative! So, that's that! And I'm glad it's illegal to drop your kiddies' fish in the lake.

I am really enjoying this conversation I think my perspective has dramatically changed. I'm actually more unsure of what I think all I've cemented is what I know. I'm grateful to the OP, this is such a important discussion for hobbiests such as our selves to have.

It is quite feasible they do it for natives here in the state of maine. I agree that it would probably lead to some bureaucratic bullcrap but I still think this is a good idea and worth a shot.
Laws are laws The reason for Any and I mean ANY fish being illegal In any specific state is due to the extensive research done but the local government. Just because we are experienced fish keepers does not give us the right to house an animal just because we are more aware then the general public. Its like saying you can run stop signs because you have been driving a long time Its just doesn't work and the Law will agree with me
Extensive research?? When they created my hometown's exotic animal bylaw they literally went to the Toronto Zoo and wrote down anything that they didn't like the look of. That's why anything that the zoo didn't have isn't on the list.
