doesn't it drop down to freezing in FL every once in a while? I'd think that alot of the tropical fish couldn't deal with that. has FL had issues with giant snakehead aswell or just the northern?

There was a thread, someplace, about a year or so ago that showed picks and lists of many different aquarium fish found dead in Florida after a cold snap. Mostly in golf course ponds.

We visited my uncle in Lady Lake (Central Florida) last summer. He lives on a canal and said that the previous winter there were tons of Tilapia and other fish floating after the big freeze.

He also said that there were some lakes (deeper, more influx of warm groundwater?) where they had survived and he expected them to be back before long.

so i can just go to RI walk into a fish store buy some any bring them home!!!!?

Nope...it's illegal to carry them past state line and is considered a felony.

I think that old saying a few rotten apples spoil the whole barrel def. applies to this thread.

just because a few lfs owners do keep illegal fish doesn't mean they will be able to keep doing it.

i live in Northern CA, and i knew a lfs owner, really nice guy and what not, and he kept an asian aro in the store by his cash register for a long time, and at the time, I didn't even know it was an asian aro until one day, i came to the store, and the fish was gone.

I asked what happened, and apparently either someone told the FWS dept or they were doing random checks, and fined him big time. His only break was they didn't confiscate the fish even though he said they could've. he took the fish home, and a few months later, went out of business.

Look around the LFS scene around my area, before, there were baby turtles with a not for sale sign, but if wink wink, you know the owner, or give them the right price, then you got a baby turtle.

Not anymore. no lfs around my area now have any type of baby turtles as far as I can see.

Laws are laws The reason for Any and I mean ANY fish being illegal In any specific state is due to the extensive research done but the local government. Just because we are experienced fish keepers does not give us the right to house an animal just because we are more aware then the general public. Its like saying you can run stop signs because you have been driving a long time Its just doesn't work and the Law will agree with me

Saying that all laws spawn from extensive research is quite humorous. If that was true we'd have a different tax code and no entitlement programs :screwy: (all research shows progressive taxes and entitlement programs stunt growth) Not to say there aren't good ideas and intentions hidden in there but really most law making comes down to special interests. Who has the loudest voice and the most money they get what they want. Some conservationist groups who don't know their @$$ from there elbow think all these laws make a difference. I bet all the group members have pets... ha conservation out the window :screwy:

All I'm saying is that really most of this legislation slows the inevitable and doesn't actually stop it. Maybe there are better ways to implement and enforce laws but right now I don't see anyone proposing any. Rather its the same old thing, putting out fires one at a time while not even trying to catch the arsonist(man kind).

Extensive research?? When they created my hometown's exotic animal bylaw they literally went to the Toronto Zoo and wrote down anything that they didn't like the look of. That's why anything that the zoo didn't have isn't on the list.

Being that I've breed turtles and kept baby turtles I have to ask why the flip are they illegal? I mean fish fry going to become illegal to for some reason?

I'm not joking man. That's why "Syrian Wild Ass" is on the list. Also "Terrapins" and "Giant Tortoise". What the hell is a giant tortoise? A Galapogos? A Sulcata? At what size do you consider a tortoise giant? And Terrapins? Well, Toronto Zoo has a bunch of huge Borneo River Terrapins, so apparently someone decided that these should be illegal too.

I just feel like they are making laws to make laws and in many cases that is what happens. I mean, just hanging out in congress isn't as much fun as coming up with ways to spend/waste money.

I won't say all laws regarding animals are baloney but I'll go as far as to say the overwhelming majority are bad/pointless. They are to the point that as stated before police officers don't even know/care to enforce them. If a cop can't enforce a law then WTF? So we have one(Edit its multiple departments if I'm not mistake) department dedicated to enforcing a series of mostly baloney laws, that a regular officer has no idea exist.:nilly::screwy::cry:
