Keeping Oscar from pleco food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm having a very similar problem. It was fine until a little bit ago but my pleco seems to be getting too little food now.
I'm gonna try the PVC thing. Thanks for the ideas.

Plecos Love veggies. If you took half a cucumber and stabbed it with a fork to make it sink and tossed it in (cut lengthways) I can't imagine the oscar will care and the pleco will love you for it.

I cram pellets, algae wafers and Aro sticks into one side of a zucchini slice and rubberband it to a rock (thin piece of slate) with the hidden food held against the rock. Oscar and sunfish swim up to it, smell the food in it, but can't do anything about it or see the pellets. As the pleco eats the zucchini from the normal-looking side and exposes the food hidden in it, he eats it. The other fish have no idea what he is so happy about as he enthusiastically wiggles away on his zucchini. :)

Don't waste time with cucumber. No vitamins in it. Use Squash, zicchini or other denser vegetables.

My Pleco loves zucchini :D And my Piranhas love algae wafers... don't know why but if they want to snack on them then more power to them... What they leave behind the pleco is quick to snatch up :)

Feed at night time when the lights are out.

On the other hand, the other pleco in the tank comes to beg for wafers at night.
He knows when he swims into the corner, I'll drop in some food.
but my silver dollars will steal them as well.
I just feed some more.

Watching my silver dollars try to steal wafers from my pleco is so funny. Plus when they finally get them, they swim around trying to avoid the other SD's and juggle the large wafers in their mouth until they inevitably drop them. Then the pleco pounces!

Some really fun interactions.

I just started feeding my pleco zucchini. Try it out!

If their is an Oscar in the tank you don't need to feed the pelco, The Oscar left overs will be more than enough just like what dent20 said.

Let the Oscar eat it. Assuming it's actually 'algae' tabs and not 'fish meal' tabs then it's good for him. Just feed extra so they both get some.
