Keeping REAL lobsters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there is a place out next to all the marine fish farms[wholesale-ish lots] where i frequent, they have tons of mantis shrimp about 14 inches and loads of lobster and grouper- in indoor ponds- all for consumption.

I guess its been established that you didn't mean the American lobster (sw), but anyway.....like someone has said, the tank would have to be very large and kept cold, running a chiller. You'd also have to make sure the lobster was legal size, that is if you collected it yourself. Where I live, the fine for taking an undersized lobster (one with less than a 3 3/8 inch body size) from the ocean can be very large.

I used to care for a Blue SW lobster at my work, a super market, haha, it was their catch to advertising. It needs to be kept with a chiller as said, and ours only ate live green crabs, which I would go out and catch a few every week. Or you could get them at a bait store. To make it easier to feed, sometimes we would snap the crab in half so it would still move and the lobster would grab it. We kept it in a large 100 gal long tank. But they aren't that active, mainly just sit in the corner of the tank. But that again is for a salt new england lobster, not fresh.

i dont know why everyone keeps saying they have to be really cold........spiny lobsters here in florida live in water that can be high 70's

Homarus americanus is the common Maine lobster, which is harvested from the ocean primarily for consumption by the rich.

...and they are delicious. :D

Probably not as expensive for me considering they are on our coast.

all I know is that you have to get them really really hot before you eat them! LOL. hehe I have wondered about that myself. Gotta love fresh lobster. It's been a lOOOng time though.

Hehe, especially when you catch them yourself, I remember when my dad had lobster pots and would take me out to go check them.  I miss those days.

The American lobster needs a large SW tank with a chiller. They prefer water temps in the 50's but can tolerate slightly warmer temps for short periods of time.
And you don't have to be rich to enjoy eating them. The catch is going up so the price is starting to drop. Can find them up here for about $6/lb now.
