I am not quite under standing how crushed coral will balance the ph would it not make the water harder?

KH/GH are what you want to test for.. my water is naturally like rocks so I don't do anything to buffer my cubans tank... But on that note both my GH/KH are off the charts so imo you are not going to overbuffer it useing the sand/CC . But I wouldn't do more then a 25% WC at a time to keep the buffering as level as possible I would be worried doing much more would potentially cause a swing. TBH I don't think it's the PH itself thats the worry but the hardness itself thats the issue. reguardless I wouldn't test the theory... something David might though, if he hasn't? If you had a need to do larger water changes I would "age" the water with a bag of CC or sand in it for 24 hours, with good aggitation I imagine you'de get a good buffer going on.

i have and have always done 75% wc with my cubans. i never had a problem. i only lost the one due to being eaten. my cuban doesnt stress or even react to wc.

-another key note here, and i can't stress this enough, is NOT to do water changes right after you feed the fishes...and with CBG, i would even wait a good 16-24 hours before doing water changes, especially if they are eating heavily. that change can cause regurgitation which is extremely stressful on the fish and in turn messes with water quality. the basic principle of not changing water right after a feeding should be followed with any predatory fish really. good luck--

Thanks guys for ur helpful responces and info. Gars seem too be very good i have been doing small wc first thing in the morning before they are fed.and seems to be working . i kept alotta sensitive fish but these guys take it very stressful keeping 3inch cuban. Can believe such small changes can kill them like that

Now that everything has settled down in the tank. I noticed on the dead ones and ones that were stressed out that the lower jar has a point in the middle like its broken has anyone seen this could it be that we're breaking their jaws?
