I am about to start building my Tanganyika cichlid tank, but still have problems choosing what to keep, I was thinking about these two scenarios:

Mixed species, but must include Black or White Calvus
Or
Tropheus tank, not sure which ones, but probably Bemba or Ikola or Duboisi.

Planning to start off with 55g (don't really want to upgrade yet, but its planned some time soon. If needed, can upgrade to a 75g quite soon, but for bigger, would have to wait.)

Filtration would be done by Fluval FX5.

So the main question is, what would you recommend for the stock for now, 55g? How many Tropheus or what species and how many for mixed set up?

Should I condition the water in the tank even tho the fish that I will get was breed in captivity many times?

Is sand a good substrate for this fish? What fraction?

Does Tropheus need hiding spots?

Thank you in advance for you answers :)

In mind I had maybe this stock list:

Altolamprologus calvus (4vnt.)Julidichromis (priklauso nuo to ką rasiu) (2-4vnt.)Neolamprologus tretocephalus (2-4 vnt.)Paracyprichromis nigripinnis (6 vnt.)
And few shell dwellers.

What you think?
Or i should go for tropheus?

Trophs would be a great species tank.

Upgrade to a 75 soon and it would be amazing

Dimmension of the tank could be:

120(48")x40(16")x60(24"), glass 8 mm

or this one, but have to check is it fits
120(48")x50(20")x50(20"), glass 8 mm

Will have to check what the store has available and get myself an X-mas present :)

id suggest trophs and ideally 75 asap i always found a 55 a bit small for mixing alot of tang species.
also fully grown calvus will eat shell dwellers.

wanna see pics when this is done though!

The thing is that I want to use a 55g is because I have a nice 3d background for it and I don't want to throw it away.

Pretty much simmilar to this.

i say skip the tropheus (personally i've never liked them) and get some frontosa, red fin caudopunctatus, julidochromis transcriptus, and/or black compressiceps
