Keeping Tanks Warm in unheated basement

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used a plinth heater (electric) for kitchens. It was about £50.
It is controlled by a timeguard ET05 thermostat (cheap!)

This combo works well for heating.

Space heating works out cheaper long term but it depends what volumes you have.

I had a 29g I used for a fry growout, and temporarily housing miscellaneous fish.

My basement was usually 50° in winter. I was able to keep this small tank at temperature with just a 50w heater, ehich based by the light on the thermostat wasn't on too much.

Before insulating it, the 100w heater I had in there was on nonstop.

I know a 29g is different than a large tank, but the principles are the same. Infact the small 29 is probably an exaggerated example, given it's small displacement and lots of glass surface area. If anything a higher volume of water would retain heat better and be more resistant to temperature fluctuations especially when insulated

Well I guess my project for the day is wrapping these tanks. I'll do the back and sides on them. I still have quite a bit left over. I won't be able to do the 150 but I can get the 29 and 75 done. Thanks guys!

My basement seems to be unusually cold this year and I might have to purchase some of those styrofoam sheets....I'm guessing places like Home Depot should have them?

Yeah, HD is where I got those pink rigid foam. They come in several thicknesses. I first tried using a box cutter and it didn't work that well, but this saw, made cutting long, straight line much easier

battling this as well. 3rd coldest feb on record where i live this year. ended up getting some eheim jager 300watt heaters for my two 55 gal tanks. going to try the insulation on the tanks as well. so far the eheims are keeping both tanks at 82-83 degrees for my flowerhorn pairs. going to have to really check the insulation in basement and consider heater. only have cold water right now for water changes so ive been filling a 18 gal tote with heater in it for doing water changes. cant wait for spring.

Pink foam is fun, it will cut cleanly in one direction with a box cutter, but perpendicular to that, it will chip and you need a saw (or use a sawing motion with the box cutter).

Just cut a bunch to insulate the cellar door, oh what fun!

Run more heat ducts! Its super easy

I have 4 runs going to the fish room and it pumps in a ton of heat. Its like a sauna when i walk in the fish room
