this fish is still to young to acquire anal fin Spangling. Sometimes kelberi do not have anal fin Spangling till a year old or longer. And females sometimes do not even develop any.

I Understand this and that's not my point, my point is that most Cichla have spangles on their dorsal fin so the dorsal is not an indicator of a Kelb at a young age. Also I've had non Kelb Pbass that have had yellow spots on dorsal fins, like some tems I had, so that is also not an indicator.

This is true.


Body color (for me is key). I have three different kelberis with different head shapes as well. All with the 24k gold color......but, the bahia has a 14k gold color.

First time i heard that females might not have any. So far all the kels i have seen has developed anal fins spanglings. Have 2 females and they both have it. Any examples?

While it is young, the black bars dun look like kel bars. Its not the lack of anal spanglings that i base my opinion on.

You are correct, most cichla do have dorsal spangling. What makes a dorsal fin spangling a indicator at this at to me, is that the spots on the dorsal are yellow now and no longer white. That is usually a kelberi trait. other cichla that develop the spangling usually will me a more "whiter" coloration, or a light yellow but usually not a gold/ super yellow.

its not really that females might not have any at all, which i have seen some females with none. but, its just females might not have as much as a male and if they do have some anal fin spangling, then it might take a lot longer to develop. This might or might not develop with bahia, but I Know for a fact that this is the case with wild kelberi that have went around over the years.

Any pics. All the wc females i have seen has many spanglings also. My wc has more spangles then my bahia in fact. Will post picture once i get to a computer.

They dont look like bahias to me.
They look more look occel or mono/occel hybrids. NIce bass tho.
