Keyholes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Keyholes are absolutely beautiful little cichlids, probably the only cichlid type I'd consider keeping again. I had a breeding pair at one point, but after laying eggs nothing materialised with them

The sajica could prove problematic but the South American fish should be fine.

When people talk about cichlids being peaceful, it's usually in relation to other cichlids. Peaceful does not always mean tetra safe. Most New World cichlids will eat smaller fish given the opportunity; it's in their nature. Discus, angels, keyholes, etc. will often hunt and eat small tetras given the opportunity. In terms of aggression keyholes are one of the most timid SA cichlids you can get, but again that's all relative.

Yes I have a convict female and a pair of sajica and the male instantly went to check them out, a little bit of chasing but nothing serious yet.

Thankfully no! I said "if". The little guy holds his own, but seems perfect for a community tank of larger fish.
Oh okay lol yah they seem to be coexisting just fine with all my other big fish so far so good

Did they keep spawning and never able to raise the fry ?

They spawned once, then not again; was quite disappointing
I have 5 and I already see 2 that are literally always together so maybe that's my pair I wouldn't mind to see them in parent mode since they are small I'm hoping they dont try to kill everyone. My other fish I don't want to spawn in a community setting bc I feel like they have more potential to hurt others
Yours were the only cichlids in the tank right ?

Lucky. I've only seen them here once and that was because I requested them.
If they hadn't arrived two months late I'd have a group of them instead of my convict and barbs.
I find them frequently here.

Finally found me some keyholes, I grabbed 5 little 2" guys to grow out. I was afraid they get swallowed by bigger fish but parrots and Severums haven't cared for them and my chocolate looks a little evil but hasn't ate any yet. My Male sajica chases them around but nothing serious so far. I really hope they work out I wish they were bigger but only found little guys. Already eating flakes though. How fast do these grow? I know they are pretty passive just hoping they hold their own as a group and bulk up in time for them not to be prey or picked on

They are very gentle, they only lightly charged some minnows I kept alongside them when protecting the eggs. Yes, was only some keyholes and minnows

There's actually a pair of these guys, about 2", in the tank at my LFS that are spawning. They have the back corner to themselves and the rest of the keyholes are confined to the remainder of the tank. It's a small tank, maybe 20 gallons. Probably 8 keyholes total. I was tempted to grab them all.
