My jack dempsey kills everything that I put in the tank with it. It is only 4", but it has killed three plecos (two of them were at least twice its size) and one 6'' gar. What is safe to put with it?

Try a red devil.

I wouldnt add any other Cichlids to your 50 gallon. I would only try to add some dithers like Giant Danios or some Autrailan Rainbow fish or maybe a Rapheal or Pictus cat.

he's in a 20 gallon right now while the 50 gallon is being set up - so if I added the other fish at the same time, would that work?

Most of the time a Jack Dempsey doesn't even come close to living up to the reputation of it's namesake, I always enjoy hearing of one that does. Why don't you just give him a tank to himself and grow him out as a "show fish"? I had one for 13 years in a 40 gallon to herself and she would attack anybody that walked by, splashing water EVERYWHERE. Lot's of fun lol.

I think that a butti and a RD would both own any JD. My old JD used to get ripped up pretty bad by a con half the size.

Good to see common sense prevailing there. It's true, even a smaller RD or Butti would destroy a Jack...especially in the confines of a 50 gal.

Try "freshwater morays". There are many varieties and are amazing fish to keep. I have 2 over 20" and can hand feed them goldfish. They are also trained on floating and sinking pellets. They're always out and nothing messes with them. It's freaky when you see them swimming under the lunar lights. Just don't get bit by these guys. Here is the only pic I could find.
