Just cuz it hasnt been "reported" does NOT mean it has never happened throughout ALL of the years of time.... The coalacanth was "reported" to be exctinct for millions of years, and them boom, finally someone "reported" seeing it... i wouldnt put it past me, to think one orca got one slow swimmin human. RARE indeed, but must have happened once...

we can never possibly known that though, but i seriously doubt it. There was a boy swimming in a bay in alaska that was charged by a killer whale, but the whale never actually grabbed him.

and the Coelacanth was "thought" to be extinct, no one reported seeing it because it was discovered in a fishing net!

Everyone has their bad days, the wale just woke up on the wrong side of the swiming pool. Not like he gets to decide that he needs a day off. If it was a smaller animal like a cat he would have scratched his trainer or bitten him, just happens that it was a killer wale, and his size makes his hissy fits a little more serious. Im sure that their are plenty of fish owned by our forum members that would love to get ahold of someone every now and then.

I believe that that whale was born in captivity. I guess that doesn't make up for all those millions of years of evolution though.

thats it exactly cant change the preditor responses in wild creatures only breed it out of them..

UPDATE: http://newsinthesun.com/?p=3258

The trainer died due to asphixiation or compession in the lungs, apparently Keto who was born in SeaWorld Orlando (<-I'm a regular visitor) crushed him while they were working on a maneuver which they speed swim to the bottom and hydro or rocket hop.. something like that..lol But the whale is not being held resposible, it did not pull the trainer to the bottom, it was an accident which happens in just about any job.

I understand you all have your opinion about captivity and such, but Im okay with it. Its sad that the wild orca population is declining due to environmental hazards. Just because Two whales killed a trainer in Sealand canada in the early 90's doesn't mean all whales are mean. Believe it or not SeaWorld purchased the Sealand whales and did waterworks with them without issues.

Can I ask you why they call them "Killer Whales then"?

well,I tried it with my friends Oscar, it did grab my foot and try to hold me down but the no real teeth thing saved me. Also, you said the authorities made the statement, did they arrest the whale?

Sounds like Shamu needs a vacation!

The name "Killer Whale" derives from the Spanish asesina ballenas or "asesino de la ballena" ("whale killer" in English), evidently coming from sailors who observed them hunting whales.[8][9] English-speaking scientists most often use the term "killer whale."
