Kinda sickening

I went to a LFS here, not really local, about an hour and half away, but wanted to check out what was available... Well... I was quite surprised at how many different types of fish they had, friendly staff, and at least one tank was being cleaned, looked like she was going down the line. Thought it was pretty awesome... Til I saw some big ass fish in not to big tanks. They had 3 Oscars, all at least 7 inches one at least 10, in one tank, maybe a 55, but that would be pushing it. I was happy to see they had baby RTCs, as we are building a pond in our new place, but then I saw the big guy. At least 2 feet long, crammed into a 55? gallon. He couldnt turn around hardly at all and he was 2/3 the length of the tank. Sad. Very sad.

Edit: Also, I thought that most fish people dont keep dead fish in a tank, especially when its connected to several others? They had a dead cat (probably another RTC) in a tank with pirahna which just sat and devoured the guy. Dont dead fish rot and cause health problems?! Ew.. That one grossed me out..

Needless to say, I wasnt impressed and Im not sure Ill ever go back.

a dead 2 foot rtc would definately put some serious strain on the ole bio load .

sounds like a typical bad lfs, i wish that big rtc was near me , i would have scooped it

Sadly, the OP wasn't Walmart. unfortunately it was a jacks aquarium. I live by 3 of them. Two are very nice and regularly have salvinis and oscars and managuensis and even an occasional , along with tons of other cichlids (a lot are actually pretty nice quality imo). But the third jacks is horrible. All the water is yellow, at least 3 dead fish per tank, and horrible ich issues. Unfortunately with all jacks that I've been to they have every tank overcrowded, but the two good ones clean them every morning by syphoning each tank. Needless to say the photo of the Oscar was at the bad jacks. And as for Walmart, they fail... Their people aren't even trained to maintain the 6 aquariums they have and it's pathetic. Ive never seen a good quality fish at Walmart. However: when I have kids and they want a little aquarium, that's where I'll buy my fish, just because those fish are already accustomed to horrible water quality, so an irresponsible 9 year old might have a harder time killing them lol.

The jacks near me is great. Always clean and never any dead fish. They have lots to choose from. Which store is it? I will let the manager of the store I am a "regular" at know about the condition of the other stores fish.
