If you're technically inclined I would load android on your kindle, it'll be a more rounded device and not as restrictive as Amazon's proprietary os.

And not to piss on anyone's parade, but I've been suggesting to people considering a new or first tablet to go with nexus 7 instead, for its versatility and a large community support.

Yea I can imagine, I recently got my parents their first tablet, all they use it for is play pop the balloon type games :D

Not much into murder mystery.... Hmmm..... The only one I can think of that I've read is "And Then There Were None," Forgot the author though.
Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files" are kind of in that direction. Dresden is a Private Eye who is hired to solve murders with a twist: He's a legit wizard.
