King of mechanical filtration?
How about... Built for 10,000 gallon outdoor pools filled with dozens of dirty bodies, constant dirt, dust, bugs, debri and all sorts of nasty stuff blowing in? Filters down to 5 micron (that is way smaller than any visible particle, down to the level of filtering out Ick, free floating algae and other water born diseases). Cheap at ~$220. Darn near maintenance free when used on aquariums.
Nothing comes close to pool DE filters when it comes to mechanical filtration. I have been running my Hayward EC40 for 24 x over 365 on its initial charge of DE. My maintenance routine is unplug my sump pump, pump the handle on the EC40 a couple of times, then plug the pump back in. On a slow day it might take all of 30 seconds... every few weeks! Since I run it off my sump pump it is practically free to run!
I have tried all sorts of cartridge based filters... NuClears, Big Blues, Magnum 350's... and none of them come anywhere close to my EC40 for water quality, ease of maintenance, cost of ownership or bang for buck... not even remotely close! I have a half dozen filter socks that I have never even tried to use because the EC40 is such a perfect filter.
Try an EC40... see for yourself if it is king of mechanical or not? You are going to have a very hard time finding anything other mechanical filter that filters out water borne pathogens!
Here is a picture my EC40 on my Hex tank. It used to be on my 110g tank before it sprung a leak:
