Know When To Stop

Try doing it with Marine water!!

I do this so often at work that I am (or should be) an expert at knowing when to stop (I'm really not sure I should be admitting to that!) :D but the week just gone I got a mouthful of salty water, yum yum.

I did it with the pond ONCE. The pond was so disgusting and dirty, it wasn't cleaned for months, and I was getting it ready for some koi ...........got a mouthful and then threw up all over the patio. Quite the site. LOL. I try to just submerse them now so I don't have to start the siphon.

Not me I learned from my mom swallowing nasty water. So I only get the ones that you can pump up.

1 Oscar,1 Vieja Syn, 1 Flowerhorn, 2 Angelfish, 6 female Bettas, 2 Cories, 6 Blue Rams, 1 gold Gourami

Had this happen to me like 20 years ago and I still remember it.

Since then I have learned submerge a good portion of the hose until the bubbles start coming out then drop the other end in the bucket and pick up the slack and it back flows into the bucket.

This happens to me at least a couple times a year. One memorable time was last year I was listening to my gf talking and not paying attention and got a little neon tetra in my mouth. Immediately spit it into the bucket I was going to be siphoning into and dumped it back in the tank while gagging. Little guy is still swimming to this day.

Only got a mouthful of dirty goldfish water once, when I was about 12. It was so nasty! Lesson learned.

Hello; I started using clear siphon hoses some time ago. You can see where the water is. I also like the hose to not be too short which also helps in geting enough water in the tube to start a siphon before reaching your mouth.

Sucking on the hose is so primitive...I can't believe people are still doing this. Since 1990 I've been using this simple method- Get the siphon, place your thumb over the small end. Scoop some water with the big end, hold it up in the air. Let all the bubbles go to the top. Stick the big end back in(still holding it up) without losing water. Then turn it around so it's ready to to start cleaning the gravel. Release your thumb (over a bucket). Water starts to flow.

Note: When you start this process, the end where your thumb is must be at a lower level then the big end.
