I do it a little different.Submerge the big end in the tank while holding it in an upright position so it fills with water,meanwhile the small end is in a bucket or over a drain.Raise the big end so the water inside of it starts to drain and before it is completely empty place it back in the tank and the incoming water will start the syphon.

I don't suck I blowI use to suck it and get a mouth full but now I just blow it and wait for it to discharge.

just use submersible pump to clean your aquarium it is best than vacuum hose... tho...
