The problem with Dovii is that people other than fish guys would not know what they were other then a big grey fish. But, they would be cool.

I could collect P-bass just fine, and I never kept an arowana. this could be just the excuse.

I'd just go with some Florida natives like some others have proposed...some sunfish or maybe smaller fish like flagfish, madtoms, etc.

we use the guppies to get the GT's nice and big to put in 180 gal tanks

Invasive species like mayans and jags would be nice. It can lead into a creative lesson plan. For wow factor I would probably go with a massive wet pet w/ personality. I've kept a GT in the classroom before. He hid from the kids all day long. Get a true glass banger who'll splash the kids when they tap the glass.
