Carp are not native fish, although they have been here a long time, they are invasive species, native to China, and other parts of Asia.
There are carp that reach 7ft long in the Ganges river in India.
While scuba diving in Lake Michigan I've seen many 4 footers.
Not bad smoked, or even fried in butter.

Its a shame how over looked they are since they areconsidered a invasive species even though they've been in the United States forover 100 years. Anglers usually consider them garbage fish and never reallyfish for them. I honestly think they are one of the hardest pulling freshwaterfish and would really like to see them as a sportfish in the US. Im sureChub_by knows all about this since he is from Germany and in Europe the Carp isa highly regarded sportfish and they are technically invasive there too. I dontget it but I cant wait to have my own carp and grow them out it should be areal cool experience. Honestly though I've caught only small mirrors in my timebut I think they fight harder then commons even though the only difference is agenetic mutation with the way they are not completely scaled.

Yep I sure do know all about it :D
Carp fishing is so awesome! They're not too easy to lure but not too hard, and they fight quite hard depending on their size :)
Also, carp are awesome fish for ponds. They grow quicker, and get tamer, and have bigger mouths than koi. I love my mirror and am getting a common, too for my pond ;)
You americans really are unlucky not to have them as a sportfish.

Honesty...the carp do not deserved the title as sportfish in Americas. But they are best roughfish when it comes to bowfishing.

Why? I don't know any non-predatory NA fish that will keep up with carp when it comes to putting up a fight ;)

Buffalos.....

Carps should not deserve a title as SPORTFISH in Americas. They are simply a roughfish which is popular for bowfishers not actual fishermen. They may put up great fight on the line but that doesn't mean they are popular sportfish. It's just a "trash" fish.

I'm going to have to disagree the buffalo are the in the same family look almost the same and are commonly mistaken for carp. Scientifically they are classified in the same order as carp. I mean I belong to the Carp Anglers Group and you'd be suprised how many people target carp on rod and reel in the US. By saying that carp aren't gamefish but buffalo are is like saying that largemouth bass are sport fish but bluegills arent even though both fish are from the same family and put up great fights. Yet again that's just my opinion on the topic.
