do you think i would ever see them? he feeds the fish daily and you can easily see the bluegills

As long as they get fed a floating pellet you should see them.

Koi are like dogs....

Once the find a food source they will come to the surface and beg for food. It might take a fews days/weeks, but they will see and learn form the other fish feeding.
