This is what she looks like. Is this normal?!
that's not pregnant. there is something seriously wrong with that fish. i would have put it down a long time ago

They usually get very large bellies when ready to lay eggs, but I have NEVER seen anything that extreme..I agree with Jose, something is very wrong with this fish. Maybe something with it's swim bladder?

Koi will a lot of times be very jumpy, and will stress in an aquarium. Do I think a koi in a tank is a good idea. I can also tell you you need to be very careful when you buy koi they may carry the khv virus and can wipe out all other koi. They are also nasty meaning they are going to make a mess of your tank. I would buy an intex pool to keep them in until the time comes for your pond. You may just stunt its growth by putting it in an aquarium. You will be suprised at what you can get a koi for exp. at some of the koi shows. With koi size is not the biggest thing to run price up. It is its body /skin/ type of koi ect. You can get large pond grade koi at great prices.
As for the koi in the photo something is really wrong with that one, pregnant koi do not look like that. It could be dropsy, could be egg bound which I doubt or could be a tumor. There is a few koi forums around with some very smart koi folk. But I can tell you if that koi does not get treatment you will most likely loose it.

the fish pictured is a goldfish, not a koi

This is an outdoor pond. We had just gone into the pond to get out tree limbs from a storm last night, so stirred it up. It was quite clear before we got in. We were on vacation for the past few weeks and just came home yesterday and found her this way. Having no experience with fish, we just assumed she was pregnant but it seems there may be more to this swelling based on everyone's comments. So, do you take fish to a doctor? If not, then I guess we need to "Put her down"....how do you do so humanely? She's obviously much to large to fit down a toilet (she's about 10" long).

Some things can be treated I have posted on my facebook page I have a lot of koi/ goldfish friends. So I am trying to get you some info. If you do have to put it down cloveoil is best. Thats what a lot of us use to sedate our koi if one needs treatment for tumors n such. You just use more if you have to euthanize .

get some clove oil from places like GNC. add 15-20 drops per gallon. she'll go to sleep slowly. i leave them in for about 30min to make sure theyre gone
