Koi with other non-carp fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, guys! So sad...we've had her for several years, she's wintered in the pond with no problem. Kind of funny to find out she's a goldfish. We bought her from a garden center and the sign definitely said "koi". Oh well, I'll read up and get a real koi replacement.

Best way to tell the difference is Koi have barbles also called whiskers at their mouth gold fish do not have this unless you come across a mix, but those will be just a brown color sorta of like a lake carp.

Mrs. Moose: Please let me know if you find any additional information on possible treatments or what this condition might be. I will see if she makes it through the night and go to get the clove oil tomorrow.

Thank you all again!

I will , so far the ones that have seen the picture are thinking it is a really bad tumor and do not think it will recover from it. I had a 18 inch one I had to put down due to the same reason.

My husband jumped in the pond with the underwater camera and got a clearer photo of this fish. Let me know if you see anything that makes you think she's salvageable.

It could be 1 of 2 things 1- swim bladder or 2- a bad case of dropsy
1- a congenitally deformed swim bladder, cancer or tuberculosis in organs adjacent to the swim bladder, constipation, poor nutrition, chilling, serious parasitic infestations, serious bacterial infections if you suspect swim bladder in the fish you should first check and treat for other diseases. If you have eliminated other causes, make sure that you are giving right food and see if the fish is passing feces normally. If any doubt feed live food as roughage
2-Dropsy normally means fliud in the abdomen, but in fish keeping it includes all diseases which make tha abdomen swell abnormally. These diseases often can't be distinguished from each other without a post-mortem. A swollen abdomen that developes slowly is generally due to cancer internal organs or the presence of large parasites(the effect of thier size alone, or because they cause liver or kidney damage or peritonitis). In such cases it won't spreadto your other fish so long as you remove it.Acute dropsy is a sudden swelling of the scales to stand out, the most common problem is bacterial septicemia--veterinary treatment will be necessary.
This is about as much info that i know that might help you if you decide to keep it.
