hey guys, while picking up dog food and quickly scanning all the f/w tanks i saw this lil guy swimming for his life in the koi stock. feeling bad and knowing i got a empty running ten gallon at home i bought him. all the lfs worker could tell me was that someone special ordered it and never came n got him and that its a "mudpuppy". he's currently enjoying his own quiet 10gl with occasional rain of earthworm chunks. i'd like to know what he is exactly so i can provide him exactly what he requires

I'm no expert but it kinda looks like a tiger salamander larvae. I know its not a certainty but maybe a place to start looking.

I don't know much about the species, but this website should help. I do remember you want to keep the water cold.

yeah im pretty sure i snatched him out of grim reapers hands when i brought him home. he's slowly gaining his weight back with me, and i have him in my bedroom where its cooler plus i put a small fan over the screen top which dropped the tem to 68-70. i posted over at caudata.org but haven't got a defenite answer on sp; yet. and googling tiger salamander larvae isn't any help because all the info is jumbled up with axolotl's as well.

To me the little guy looks more ambystoma-ish than necturan and the gills dont look right for either the necturan or the axolotl. Check out the larval little guy towards the middle of the page. http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Ambystoma/A_tigrinum.shtml

but remember he was kept with koi so they chomped his gills down to nubs..

Even so there is something about the shape of the head/jaw and the remains of the gills that just looks tiger salamandery.

true. i still haven't been able to tell the difference between tigers and axie's.
