labeled "mudpuppy" at lfs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah but some tigers exhibit neoteny too. :( All I can say is keep him cool and and good luck. I've raised a few different salamanders from eggs mainly marbles and a few different necturans and they can be really cool pets but fickle at times.

Looks like a Mudpuppy. To distinguish between a larval mudpuppy and other larval salamanders, note that larval mudpuppies have distinct longitudinal banding and four toes on their hind legs. Other distinguishing features of mudpuppies, as compared with other salamanders, are the absence of eyelids and a lack maxilary bones in the upper jaw.

Just not sure which species it is.

Neoteny in larvae tiger salamanders is rare. I agree, it doesn't look like a necturus. Nonetheless, you can keep ambystomid larvae and the mudpuppy in a similar manner.

A while back ago my lfs had the same thing down to the name!It was wee smaller & had bigger gils ,but as he got older his externel gills grew shorter, a friend of mine had purchased one of these, months before i had purchased mine.I gave mine to him. They both live in a 40g half water half land,There growing like weeds,i know he feeds them live bloodworms,as a treat once a mouth a pinkie mice, cans of snail meat. The lighting im not sure of the top of my head or filter/water fall.! There salamanders as mentioned, but which its to young to tell his measures 12" on one the other 9".

When I lived in michigan I used to catch mudpuppies. Biggest one I caught was about 8 inches and really thick

wow cool save... i love really special different creatures... and he is cute too.. looking forward to updates.. keep the pics coming

yup got a positive i.d. on caudata that its a tiger juvie. hes chubbing up a bit but still looks pretty pathetic, probably cause he used up all his fat reserve while trying to stay alive at the lfs. ill update with pics in about a week or so. very dumb eater tho... i have to drop the food ON his head or push it in front of his mouth with a straw. seems like he solely hunts by prey movement..

I've caught lots of larval tiger salamanders. That is definitely not one. Best guess is a real mudpuppy, just a young one before they develop their characteristic wrinkly looks
