LV Golden Knights!
I am thinking about replacing my dual mag18s on my 360 gallon tank with two laguna max flo pumps. Does anyone know how much flo the 2900 has with 5' of head?

found this chart online

I have two 1.5" drains attached to 1.5" pvc on my 360 with no overflows, so theoretically with the ball valves on those drains wide open I would need 4200 gph. We all know pumps lose flow rate with head, that is why I am trying to find a chart of feet of head vs flowrate for these pumps.

Took more digging, but I answered my own question.

Does not list for 5' of head though, what do you guys think? I feel it would be nice to open the ball valves on my drains to 100%, right now with only 2 mag 18s they are both closed ~50% each

Page 19 of the PDF linked above has the info you are looking for.

The New Max Flo 2900 (PT8252) does 2,245 @ 5' head on 112 watts.
The older model Max Flo 2900 (PT350) does 2,409GPH @ 5' head on 130 watts.

There are still a lot of distributors selling the older generation pumps that are a little less efficient than the "next Generation" models that they came out with in 2012. Make sure you ask for the model number and that it matches the model in the catalog that I referenced. The current Max-Flo 2900 is model number PT8252, whereas the older model is PT350. If you notice a pump is being sold for a bit cheaper than other places, there's a good chance it's the older model. AZ ponds has both in stock and you'll see that the older model is only $199.95 and the newer model is $249.99. I'm not saying that's the best place to buy them, but on that site you can see what I'm talking about in regards to the older models compared the the newer "Next Generation" models.

Regardless of whether you go with the older Lagunas or the "Next Generation" models that they came out with in 2012, you are going to get a lot more flow per watt. Good luck.

That drain flow chart you referenced is more aggressive than a lot of the numbers I've seen.

Reefcentral has a 1.5" drain doing 1300GPH - http://www.reefcentral.com/index.php/drainoverflow-size-calc

This external overflow box has a 1.5" drain at 1,600GPH - http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/catalog/product/view/id/1346/

It would be a shame to get pumps that are going to overpower your drains. You would either have to T off flow back to your sump or restrict flow with a ball valve. Restricting flow would be a real bummer, since, if I understand correctly, these Laguna Asynchronous pumps will use the same wattage at any head height, as opposed to centrifugal pumps like Reeflos which will typically draw less wattage the more you restrict flow.

If you have 5' of head and you have two 1.5" drains, the biggest I would go is two Laguna Max Flo 2000s. They would give you a combined 2,884GPH on 160 watts.

What size are the drains on your 225G? If you also have dual 1.5" drains you should be ok with running one Max Flo 2900, but if your drains are smaller than 1.5", the 2900 may overwhelm your drains.

Sorry I was not more clear, I do not have overflow boxes and the actual drains themselves are 2.5", my bulkhead/strainer reduces it to 1.5" with 1.5" pvc running to the sump. I have two such drains and would like to run two pumps on my 360, which two lagunas should I get? The 225 will also have 2.5" drains and I will be using the same bulkhead/strainer combo.

here's how the bulkheads look: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?465590-Bulkheads-Leaking-HELP!

I had been using a Mag 18 for the last 12 years on a bank of tanks, and the 18 finally died. After reading about the Lugunas. I decided to try the 2400.
It is very quiet compared to the Mag, and flow is a bit stronger at about 5 ft of head (as it should be)
my only minor problem with the laguna is it is not really set up to use PVC, and I had to do a bit of goofing around to get it set up to my already hard piped system.
I have not noticed a change in electric usage.
