In his defense

In america, carp is considered as a pest, I'm glad they didn't just throw them on the shore as most people normally do. Of couse they could have handled them more gently. In Europe, carps are considered as a sports fish, where in America, most are speared and discarded, rarely if ever eaten.
The gars, if I'm not mistaken, they weren't purposely placed in the nets that way, but they were caught by being netted, and at that size, they were in a bent position, but as tough as they are, I'm sure they were returned safely, and probably non of them died or suffered more than a days worth of psychological trauma.
