I'm in the market for a Laptop and need a hand choosing a good brand.

My old desktop is about to die on me. I thought about just getting a new tower for it but I have changed my mind. I think the mobility of a Laptop will better suit my needs.

To start, I have NEVER owned a laptop, so I really don't know the "quirks" to each brand. I know what I want when it comes to graphic cards, memory size, etc. But I need your help with what brands are junk and which are reliable.

My uses are:(in order of what I use most)

*Internet
*Gaming
*Picture editing
*some Video editing(not much)
*and I will be starting online school w/U of Pheonix soon

I went to Bestbuy and all the guys there suggested a Gateway and said to stay away from Dell. What do you guys/gals suggest?

lenevo ftw!

thinkpad is probably there best, since its been around so long. thinkpad had the best touch pad as far as im concerned.
right now im using one of the idea pads, i dont like the touch pad as much, but i got it because it was such a good deal. i got the y550. but ill have to see how it lasts in the long run my thinkpad lasted a good 3 years, with 8 hour a day usage. eventually the case broke where it attaches to the hinges(a common problem in laptops in general). it still works i actually gave it to dad and hes going to replace the case and use it as his own.

since you want gaming you need to buy one with a video card and lots of ram

Find a local geek through Craigslist or the Yellow Pages and have them build you one - you won't get a stock laptop at a good price that is top of the line. Alien are nice, but expensive. Stay away from Dell and Gateway, period. They're stock garbage - you're paying an extra $500 for a name.
