If you think Macs are expensive, check out Macmall.com. They randomly run specials and the last one allowed you to get the macbook air (thinnest and lightest laptop built to date) for about $1,050. This was the air that had a 128gb solid state drive, 2gb ram and and over 5 hour battery life. That's a freakin steal!

Might be a steal in terms of Apple - but I can get a PC laptop with the same specs for around $600. :)

if you havent grown up with mac i probably wouldnt switch, unless your really enthusiastic about it. because the interface differences are frustrating if you really new how to set your pc, how you like it.

i would say since your planing on gaming, mac is probably out of the running , although support for them is getting better.

for hardware, yes. But then you would be stuck running windows or some linux distro. OS comes out of the box with a lot more stuff than windows, also. Then again (outside of 2000 and XP), I'm an avid hater of windows. This is coming from a person who grew up building and programming on IMB machines.

I made the switch a few years ago, it only took a few days for me. Even at a disadvantaged learning curve, my wife only took a few months. The difference is made up for by the fluidity.

Most of the big label games either come out on mac or are ported to it by a 3rd party company. If you find a game that isn't supported, there are some very fast emulators to simulate windows environment.

linux has gotten a lot more advanced, the os like ubuntu are really good now.

i had a hacked osx to run on ibm, i didnt notice any more extras then i find in linux or windows. what are they?

btw with windows 7 i would say its out done all the past versions including xp.

i hadnt noticed any emulators for osx yet, thats cool to know

Really,?

I have 2 Laptop's and a Desktop. Love them all. I guess to each there own. You having trouble with them man?

I had trouble with both of them crashing. I only make my judgements off of owning two. If so many other people have them and like them, they must be a decent computer.

I really like linux, but it's just not some people's cup of tea

I was just referring to the included software suite has a lot more functionality (not to mention the interconnections are a lot better) than out-of-the-box windows.

I've heard good things about win7, I'll have to check it out.

i just switched from using a pc all my life to a macbook pro. i really enjoy it. its really fast, but on the expensive side. i could have gotten a completely decked out imac with 2tb of memory and a 27" display for what i paid for my macbook. however they did just release a new macbook with all the features of the 13" macbook pro for the old macbook price of 1k. if your going to school and can wait a little bit you an use your school email adress to get a discount on the overall price. i saved 100 off the price, $50 off of iworks, and another 100 off of the insurance program.

A lot of it depends on what your price range is. For video and picture editing, you can't really go wrong with a Mac. The only problem with that is, you would pretty much have to pay an arm, a leg, and your firstborn. If you would want to go with a PC, I think this might be one of your best bets: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146584 . If you have a different price range in mind, definitely let us know.

I just cheked that one out, I would get this for myself if I were notebook shopping.

Good find.

And why do people say mac? He said he wanted to play games. Macs are great, but not for gaming.

Because he said he wanted to do some video and picture editing. They also get pretty decent battery life.
