I am guessing mine swam so little was because he was always full, he never had to swim around. they dont like moving around much during the day, but if they are hungry, then I imagine they are going to, thats my guess.
Since you are looking for unique, big fish, I would recommend a chinese perch, a widebar dat, your oscar, a flash juruenses, a pbass and a clown knife. That would give you a variety of body shapes and colors and most of these fish are fairly mild mannered.
