Large fish removal and transport?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had to use a bass net to move my niger cat because it was all the guy had at his house. It was awful, he got completely tangled up and I had to cut the net off of him. I will never use a bass net on a fish ever again, the large minnow net goes everywhere with me now.

Pillow case... float it in the tank the week of moveing. makes catching and stress alot less on the fish. I like cotton. Just make sure it's decent quality. And once he's in the case and you let a good portion of the water out restrict his movement as much as possible... allowing the fish to thrash is how tanks get broken, fish break fins/spines ect.. I've found with bigger fish that don't have barbs holding them firmly but loosely to your chest and only tighening up when they move works really well... You end up drenched.. lol.. But I"ve never lost a fish or damaged one badly with this method.

99% of the time I see big fish hurt in transport is in trying to get the fish into the transport container.

Don't be in a rush to catch him. I've always found moveing slowly and coaxing a fish into a pillow case, net ect is alot less stressful and dangerous for all involved. But once you have them, Don't let go!

use the pillow case then stick em in a large cooler

IMO a large minnow net is the way to go

i went to Bass Pro Shops and found these HUGE nets. i got a black one that is very deep and a white one that is wider, but not as deep (each one was under $10).

when i catch fish, including my arowana, i herd them with one of the nets into the other net and then hold the two nets together to lift them out of the water. ]

this only works if you're moving ONE silver arowana. the second one knows what is coming and will remove himself from the tank before he'll allow you to catch him.. lol.
