Large Flower Horn laying on bottom unable to swim right

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a similar issue, here is what I did that resolved it for me:
1) Stop Feeding, if its stomach is bloated...it would just make it worse.
2) Add some Epsom salt into the water, Epsom salt (Magnesium sulphate) at 1-2 tsp/10 gallons of water can be added.Keep the lights off.
3) It looks like Swim bladder disorder; hence search the forum you might find some suggestion that might work.
4) You may start feeding after 3-4 days, if you feeding pellet food; soak them in Epsom salt solution and feed it. please keep it to fewer pellets

Do let us know more about your FH diet that could help us narrow down the issue.

Note that it would take some time for it to recover, please be patient.

Well he is still responsive upon sight thinking he will be fed. He is a great pet. Leaving the water alone tonight since he is more lively than yesterday. It is already treated with salt. Tomorrow I will do a water change. There is no light on his hospital tank and I won't feed him tonight, when I do I will soak his pellets in salt and keep it to just a few. He eats only Massivore for the most part, sometimes, reluctanly, frozen shrimp or hikari food sticks. I don't feed live since I don't want to risk disease or get an already picky fish hooked on live. Thank you For the remedy that worked for you Prakashv.

Your welcome MALAMUTE135, I would still like to stop feeding for 2-3days just to be easy on the stomach. The diet looks good, usually people tend to overload with protein thus depriving of vitamins and fiber. Live food is a absolute no-no from end too, lost a couple of them due to this.
As per salt, I hope you are using Epsom salt for the treatment(check with a local drug store for Epsom salt).
Also try to aerate the tank by adding couple of air-stones.

I hope it recovers asap, do keep us posted.

Cheers

Tank is very aerated by a Second Nature pump and one air stone, so the top is even covered with bubbles. I'm not feeding him right now and he is able to Hoover above the bottom about 4 inches, though still sideways he does seem to be doing better so I am optimistic at this point. The top has no film on it it's just bubbly from a strong pump and only 10 gallons to aerate.
Salt is Doc Wellfishes Aquarium Salt for fresh water. Done per the directions on the carton.

He is looking better yet tonight, swimming circles around his hospital tank looking at me. Now however he is swimming completely upside down????? No poop in his tank so i am sure he is constipated but dont know what i can do to help him. Any suggestions? I tried feeding him peas but he spits them out. Anyway heres another pick of my upside down flower horn.

Hi MALAMUTE135
It is swim bladder, I believe you haven't tried the epsom salt therapy I had mentioned.

Please note, epsom salt is not similar to aquarium salt or any other type of salt. He definitely is constipated, I hope its not parasites.
Here is what I would like you to do

1) Add EPSOM salt Epsom salt (Magnesium sulphate) at 1-2 tsp/10 gallons of water. This would help it in recover. I believe I have mentioned it twice but it doesn't look like you used Epsom salt.
2) Water Changes, ensure you do 10-20% WC daily, when topping off ensure to include Epsom salt in the proposition mentioned above.
3) Do not feed the fish for at-least a day, try feeding it on 2 or the 3rd day but ensure you soak these pellets in a Epsom salt solution for like 2-4 minutes and then feed it. To make Epsom solution added about 2Ogm of Epsom salt to about 300 ml of water.

Try these, but do not skip the Epsom salt. Reply back in case of a doubt
