Nahh, it was a male. Genes do have alot to do with humps, but another factor is mood. Stick a fishes face in the mud his whole life and treat him like crap, his hump isn't going to be much. Spoil him with clean water, room, good food, and maybe a piece of a#$ and it'll come out.

Sorry to hear,you were his best shot but it was over when he landed in the lfs.As you said going from a tank that was neglected,high nitrates,high DOC etc to clean water that fast is too much stress for any fish.
